THE DELAWARE BELL

In addition to encouraging faith communities to toll their own bells, Death Penalty Action also brings it's own mobile bell, called The Delaware Bell, to executions around the country. Since 2024, the bell has been present at execution vigils outside of prisons in Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee - as well as outside various State Capitol buildings and the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, DC.

A powerful symbol of mourning and awakening, Death Penalty Action welcomes invitations to bring the bell to your event, vigil or service.

Why is it called The Delaware Bell?

A custom-made bell was built to be tolled outside of Delaware's death row for the state's executions. It was present and used for 18 executions. Then, in 2016, the state's death penalty laws were ruled unconstitutional and thrown out. Not wanting the historic bell to sit unused in storage, in 2024 Delaware's statewide coalition working for this victory (Delaware Citizens Opposed to the Death Penalty) gifted their bell to Death Penalty Action for use in protests at executions across the United States as part of the For Whom the Bells Toll campaign.

Donations to help off set the cost of driving the bell to prisons around the country are welcome and needed. Click here to support this project today.
